Downton Abbey is a British Drama that depicts the lives of Crawley Family and their servants. The series is set in the fictional Downton Abbey, a Yorkshire country house, the seat of the Earl and Countess of Grantham.
The first series spanned the two years before the Great War beginning with news of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and it was about the need of male heir for Grantham Estate. Lady and Lord Grantham have three daughters, and they’re also the heir of Grantham, but according to the law at that era, most of the property, including the estate was the right of the male heir. And one way to find the heir is with Lady Mary’s (first daughter of Grantham) marriage so her husband could be the heir of Grantham. If Lady Mary couldn’t get marry immediately, the Lord had to find another heir, and it could be Grantham’s cousin or other relatives as long as it’s still a male.
The second series covered the years 1916 to 1919, and the 2011 Christmas Special covered the 1919 Christmas period, ending in early 1920. It depicts Downtown Abbey during the World War I, where The Grantham’s heir, Matthew Crawley had to go to war. Their footman, Thomas and William were also with Matthew, and Lady Sybil (The youngest daughter of Lord Grantham) joined the voluntary aid detachment.
The special thing from Crawley Family is, although they came from a noble family, they’re very kind to their servants and the people around them (especially in the village). The interesting part of this story is it’s not only show the aristocracy life of Crawley but also their servants. And I wondered who is the protagonist but until now I don’t really know who he/she is because every person in this story has their own role, where there’s a time they have dominant role in a story includes the servants. For instance, there’s a part depicts about Anna and Mr.Bates or Thomas who wanted to be a volunteer.
An aristocracy family do has alot of servants with their own responsibilities. Sometimes a servant is not allowed to do other servants job. For example, a valet has a responsiblity to serve the Lord, take care of his wardrobe, clean his shoes but a valet can’t give a hand in the dining room. It’s complicated, right?
Over all, I give 8 stars out of 10 for this drama.
